If your boat is a 14-foot aluminum john boat, then the old standard plastic seat attached with a swivel bolt will probably do. if you want to build a high-quality seat in a fine boat, then you may be interested which high-end woods that are best adapted to marine use.. Heres my aluminum boat, i took out the terrible plywood seats and replaced them with composite wood. it will last forever and the hardware will never rust! my boat is from the 1980's so the foam. I bought an old boat for fishing small lakes near my cabin and it has bench seats with wooden tops that were all rotted. i’ve cut new 3/4 inch marine ply seats, but not sure how i want to finish them. this boat will sit outside in the weather all summer, but stored indoors in the winter.. 
wooden boat bench seats Re: alumium boat seat replacement~what type of wood? yellow pine is strong and durable but nominal standard thickness is typically 3/4 inch or 1-1/2. another suggestion that may work is using 5/4 pressure treated decking boards. they're strong with a bull nosed edge and depending on the width of your seat you'll need more than one..
