I'm gonna disagree with most here, i find work boats to be essential for my coastal cities, as fish with a workboat + lighthouse is 5 food and 1 hammer, or 2 hammers with god of the sea. in coastal cities that may not have a hill for a mine, or a city that may not have grassland/rivers, worked ocean tiles help greatly.. But that took forever because units are super slow in this game compared to civ 5, and the barbarians were everywhere! so by the time i finished that, i was already hooked trying to figure out how to get off my island. i figured out the right techs, and then finally met korea, so i turned off the game like i originally planned to and got to work..
