They want to paint the boat in the spring, launch the boat, and not give a thought to the bottom until the boat comes out of the water in the fall. depending on how warm the water is, maybe they'll look under it mid season to make sure nothing big has grown, but it's not a maintenance priority.. If you leave your boat on the water for short periods, then you do not need to bottom paint it. this is also the case if you store it on a lift, trailer, or in a dry storage facility. it is much more feasible to conduct maintenance on your hull through regular cleaning and a high-quality coat of wax.. Bottom paint (aka antifouling paint) is a paint or coating designed to discourage weeds, barnacles, and other aquatic organisms from attaching themselves to (and in the case of wooden boats, eating) the underwater portion of your boat's hull..

My 1987 bowrider is on a trailer. i use it in saltwater . the previous owner had it in the water on a dock so the bottom was painted. i've had it for 2 years now. do i need to paint the bottom with any protective paint or can i leave it as is. i don't care about cosmetics just safety, preservation and functionality. photos.
